A TDS, an SDS and a batch COA serve different purposes. Use the TDS or product overview to identify the product specification, the SDS for hazard and handling information, and the COA to review results for an identified lot. One document does not replace the others.
| Document | What to check | What it does not establish alone |
|---|---|---|
| TDS / product overview | Grade, route, declared chemistry, size and powder properties; revision | Measured results for the batch being delivered |
| SDS | Matching product identity, supplier, revision and handling information | Powder quality acceptance or coating performance |
| Batch COA / quality certificate | Lot number, date, issuer, test items, units and reported results | Performance of every future batch or of the finished coating |
Product ranges and batch results are different
A product sheet may state a permissible range or limit; a COA may state a measurement for one lot. Compare each result with the specification agreed for that exact grade, using the specified test method. A historical certificate is useful for understanding report format, but cannot certify an order that has not yet been produced or identified.
For example, WOCO’s WC10Co4Cr sample certificate identifies batch YQ10C4-0315 and is dated 16 March 2023. Keep that identity attached when sharing the sample. Do not treat the sample’s measured values as universal catalogue specifications.
Request the applicable safety document
OSHA’s SDS guidance describes a consistent 16-section format covering information such as hazards, handling, exposure controls and revision details. Request the current SDS applicable to the actual product and destination. A downloadable product overview is not an SDS.
Before issuing the purchase order
- Record the product grade and the accepted specification revision.
- List required test items, methods, units and acceptance limits.
- Specify the required COA language and link between container labels and lot numbers.
- Request the applicable current SDS and any customer-required supporting documents.
- Agree how missing results or specification differences will be resolved before dispatch.
Keep supplier declarations, independent laboratory reports and customer coating approvals clearly identified by issuer and scope. A document for one material, lot or application should not be reassigned to another.
